In December 1980, an American military patrol near RAF Woodbridge, a base in Suffolk, England, saw lights descending into the adjacent Rendlesham Forest.1 Security policemen John Burroughs and Jim Penniston found a landed unidentified aerial phenomenon (UAP) in the forest, near a joint UK-US military facility where the two allies had stored nuclear weapons in a secret bunker.2 The object was reported to have hovered over that underground bunker.3 Raymond E. Fowler said that a document he obtained describes the object as triangular in shape, landing at the back gate of RAF Woodbridge, then a joint United States Air Force (USAF)/Royal Air Force base.4 According to the book In Plain Sight, Penniston and Burroughs said they saw the craft land on 1980-12-26.5
Penniston described a small craft roughly three metres wide, composed of what looked like a black, smoky glass-like material, with unfamiliar symbols inscribed on its upper side.6 According to Imminent: Inside the Pentagon’s Hunt for UFOs, witnesses said the symbols resembled those reported at other UAP encounters.7 Burroughs saw flashing red, green and blue lights in a clearing that distorted the image of a craft, though he said he never saw anything metallic or hard.8 Penniston later said he touched the craft and made sketches of the inscriptions in a notebook.9 One such sketch survives.10 Fowler said investigators found depressions in the ground where three landing gear had rested the object,11 and that they also found radiation at the landing site.12 Nick Pope said that radiation levels tested the day after the incident were many times higher than normal background, a finding challenged by sceptics.13 Fowler’s document also describes armed security police advancing toward the object before it took off into the woods, lit by blue lights underneath and a red light on top,14 and records wild animals, including rabbits, running out of the woods after the object departed.15
The watches worn by Burroughs and Penniston were later found to have lost forty-five minutes compared with the timepieces of airmen who had stayed on base.16 Penniston said that he and his colleagues suffered “missing time” during the encounter, with their memories deliberately confused and blocked in some way.17 Luis Elizondo said that Harold E. Puthoff calls this phenomenon of lost time associated with UAP encounters, including at Rendlesham, the “Rip Van Winkle Effect”.18 After the incident, Burroughs experienced worsening health effects, including vision problems, white gums, heart murmurs and heart tissue scarring, culminating in surgery to correct damaged leaflets in his mitral valve.19 David Fravor said that United States military personnel who witnessed the event received radiation burns.20 Two of the witnesses were later awarded permanent disability by the US government for their involvement and injury.21 Fravor also said that one witness was medically disabled, and that John McCain’s office helped him get his disability status reestablished after it had initially been denied.22 McCain separately had the service records of one of the servicemen involved declassified.23
Two nights after the initial sighting, US Air Force Colonel Charles Halt, deputy commander of the nearby RAF Bentwaters base, led a patrol back into the forest following another reported landing, and later set out what he saw in a detailed memorandum.24 Halt’s patrol witnessed what he called an “intelligently-controlled” object moving through the forest.25 He made an audiotape of his live commentary, describing the object as looking “like an eye winking at you”.26 He and his patrol watched the object, which “danced about in the forest”, shed sparks that looked like molten metal, amid a heavy field of static electricity in the air.27 The object shone beams of light into the nuclear weapons storage area on the RAF Bentwaters base.28 Halt has said the nearby lighthouse was easily visible and quite distinct, at least 30 degrees away from what he saw.29 He has said he believed the vehicle was probably extra-terrestrial, having watched it hover at close range.30 He remains adamant that the objects he saw were intelligently controlled and probably non-human in origin.31 Halt has also said he believes something was controlling what he saw, describing the experience as “a bit scary”.32
Ian Ridpath and other sceptics have said that all the men saw was the nearby lighthouse, a misperception of distant lights.33 The Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) attacked the credibility of Halt’s sighting.34 Halt has said he believes there was a cover-up regarding the incident.35 According to the book In Plain Sight, radar operators have since testified that an unknown object was tracked in the area on the night of the incident.36 The same source reports that British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was privately quoted as saying “you can’t tell the people” regarding claims of an official cover-up, a phrase later used as the title of the book You Can’t Tell the People: The Definitive Account of the Rendlesham Forest Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) Mystery.37 Jonathan Caplan has described the incident as an interesting UK UAP case.38
According to Imminent: Inside the Pentagon’s Hunt for UFOs, multiple servicemen saw the UAP up close and have since gone public despite being told not to discuss it.39 The same book states that all communications on the base were switched to flash override protocol, a status that shuts down communications lines so that only the US president can reach the base directly.40 It further reports that an unidentified private plane landed on a runway outside the base afterwards, and that a group of men said to be from a defence contractor exited and were driven onto the base.41 The same source states the men were later seen loading crates onto the plane before leaving for the United States.42 According to the book, the eyewitness servicemen were called to the base’s AFOSI office the day after.43 It also reports that some servicemen said they were told never to speak about what they saw and were administered a drug and hypnotised, presumably to distort their memories.44 The same source reports that servicemen said someone from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was in the room with the AFOSI investigators.45 Years later, one serviceman reportedly recognised, from a photograph, a CIA official long associated with the UAP topic, and said that official had been present at the base the day after the event, according to the same account.46
