2014-2015 US East Coast Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) encounters

A series of repeated radar and visual encounters with unidentified aerial objects by US Navy pilots training off the eastern United States in 2014 and 2015, which continued after the carrier group deployed to the Middle East.

Beginning in late 2014, pilots flying FA-18 Super Hornet jets from the USS Theodore Roosevelt, then training off the east coast of the United States ahead of a deployment to the Middle East, began repeatedly encountering unidentified objects in restricted training airspace.1 As training continued into 2015, pilots reported encountering the anomalous objects almost every time they flew.2 For weeks, nearly every pilot on almost every mission tracked the strange objects.3 The jets involved carried newly installed AN/APG-79 Radar electronic beam scanning systems, a technical difference from the older radar fitted to the FA-18 Super Hornet jets involved in the 2004 USS Nimitz UAP encounter.4 The carrier strike group, Carrier Strike Group Twelve, also had a newly integrated data-link capability giving commanders a comprehensive overview of the battlespace,5 and new E-2D Hawkeye airborne early-warning aircraft were in the air during the encounters.6

Radar tracked unknown objects apparently hovering for hours before flying at instantaneous hypersonic speeds, at altitudes ranging from sea level to approximately 9,100 metres.7 Pilots’ onboard infrared cameras also picked up the same objects seen on radar, which pilots took as evidence the tracks were not simply radar artefacts.8 According to the source, on one occasion two fighters flying roughly 30 metres apart had an anomalous object pass through the gap between them.9 Ryan Graves said the object involved in that near-miss was a translucent sphere, described by the pilot who relayed the account to him as “a giant soap bubble”, containing a cube whose edges touched the sphere’s interior surface.10 Christopher K. Mellon separately said the object was perhaps 1.8 to 3 metres across, describing it in similar terms as a transparent, bubble-like sphere containing a black cube whose edges touched the interior of the sphere.11

Pilots reasoned that the objects could not represent a covert US government project, on the grounds that testing secret new technology against its own aircrew without warning would be an immense risk and a flagrant breach of standard operating procedure, according to the source.12 Ryan Graves said the objects were already visible when his own flight took off, remained in the sky for the duration of a flight lasting roughly ninety minutes to two hours, and were still present when a fellow pilot took off an hour later.13 When the USS Theodore Roosevelt left Florida in March 2015 bound for the Persian Gulf to join operations against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria, unknown craft apparently followed the carrier battle group across the ocean.14 Tyler Rogoway wrote that the objects’ presence in the restricted training airspace was so pervasive that it was largely common knowledge among local flying units.15

Two of the videos later released in connection with US Navy UAP encounters, the Gimbal video and the Go-Fast Video, are believed to have been filmed during this period. The Gimbal video was almost certainly filmed in late 2014 or early 2015 off the US east coast.16 A Washington Post story by Christopher K. Mellon revealed that the Go-Fast Video was filmed off the east coast of the United States in the same period.17 Lex Fridman said that very few people have spoken publicly about the 2014-2015 East Coast encounters.18

  1. Two Super Hornet pilots training for Middle East deployment with the USS Theodore Roosevelt strike group in late 2014
“In late 2014, two pilots in Super Hornet F/A-18 fighter jets had been training for imminent combat operations in the Middle East, as part of a carrier strike group led by the nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed flagship aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt.”

  2. Pilots aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt encountered anomalous objects almost every time they flew as training continued into 2015
“The stories from the east coast Roosevelt training exercises revealed how, as the training off the east coast rolled into 2015, pilots encountered these anomalous objects almost every time they flew.”

  3. F/A-18 jets in these encounters carried new APG-79 electronic beam scanning radar, unlike the jets in the 2004 Nimitz encounter
“unlike those on the USS Nimitz ten years earlier, they had new advanced APG-79 electronic beam scanning radar systems”

  4. Carrier Strike Group Twelve had a new integrated data-link giving commanders a comprehensive battlespace overview
“Carrier Strike Group Twelve, as it was known, also had a brand-new integrated data-link capability, giving commanders a comprehensive overview of the battlespace like never before.”

  5. New E-2D Hawkeye airborne early-warning aircraft were airborne during the encounters
“New E-2D Hawkeye airborne early-warning aircraft were also in the air.”

“they showed unknown objects apparently hovering for hours and then flying at instantaneous hypersonic speeds at altitudes ranging from 30,000 feet to sea level”

  8. Infrared cameras also picked up the same objects seen on radar, leading pilots to rule out false radar tracks
“when their jets’ infrared cameras started picking up the same objects, the pilots realised these were not false radar tracks at all”

  9. According to the source, two fighters flying roughly 30 metres apart had an anomalous object pass through the gap between them
“the two fighters were flying in open skies barely 30 metres apart when, out of nowhere, a mind-bogglingly anomalous object hurtled through the narrow gap that separated them”

  10. Ryan Graves said the object was a translucent sphere, a 'giant soap bubble', with a cube inside touching its edge, as relayed by the pilot who experienced the near-miss
“What the pilots saw was a translucent sphere, like ‘a giant soap bubble’, that passed between the two jets. ‘It was basically a cube inside a sphere with the points of the cube touching the outside of the sphere,’ navy fighter pilot Lieutenant Ryan Graves said of the serious near-miss incident recounted to him by his anonymous pilot colleague who experienced it.”

  11. Christopher Mellon said the object was perhaps 1.8 to 3 metres across, a transparent sphere with a black cube inside whose edges touched the interior
“Christopher Mellon gave more detail about the mysterious cube-inside-a-sphere object seen by the pilots in this incident: ‘They’re perhaps six to ten feet across. And they’re transparent, like a soap bubble with a black cube inside. And the edges of the cube are touching the interior of the bubble . . .’”

  12. Pilots reasoned the craft could not be a covert US programme, since testing secret technology on its own pilots without warning would breach standard operating procedure
“The pilots rationalised that such a craft could not possibly be part of some covert US government project because the risk involved in deploying secret new technology against your own pilots without warning was immense and a flagrant breach of standard operating procedure.”

  13. Ryan Graves said the objects remained in the sky for the duration of his roughly 90-minute to two-hour flight and were still there when a fellow pilot took off an hour later
“‘What’s fascinating and interesting about these objects,’ Graves said, ‘is that they’re up there when we take off, they’re doing their thing for our hour-and-a-half, maybe two-hour flight, and then we land. And my buddy that takes off an hour later is seeing the same things.’”
