Barack Obama served as the 44th President of the United States. Within material reviewed by Anomalica, he appears principally through public remarks on unidentified aerial phenomena and through senior officials of his administration who later featured in accounts of government UFO programmes.

John Podesta, who served as Counsellor to President Obama from 2014 to 2015,¹ had earlier been chief of staff to President Bill Clinton and later became campaign manager to Hillary Clinton.² He held top-secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearances under both Obama and Clinton.³ On his final day as Counsellor, Podesta tweeted that his biggest failure of 2014 was, once again, failing to secure disclosure of the UFO files.⁴ Obama also asked James R. Clapper to become the next Director of National Intelligence;⁵ according to Luis Elizondo, Clapper took a phone call from Obama during a meeting with Elizondo shortly before that appointment.⁶ Jesse Mitchells has stated that John Brennan served as Obama’s CIA director and Clapper as his director of national intelligence.⁷

Obama discussed UFOs in a March 2015 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the 2015-03 Obama Jimmy Kimmel Live interview on aliens. Asked whether he had gone looking for the USA, Nevada, Area 51 and UFO files upon becoming president, Obama replied that the aliens would not allow it, because he would reveal all their secrets and they exercise strict control over the government.⁸ Pressed further on whether he had looked into UFO files, he said he could not reveal anything.⁹ Told that William J. Clinton had said he checked and found nothing, Obama replied that saying there was nothing is what presidents are instructed to say.¹⁰ According to Jesse Mitchells, on James Corden’s programme Obama separately said there are things in the sky that cannot be identified and are not understood,¹¹ and he publicly dismissed as a myth the idea that beings are held captive in a basement at Area 51.¹² Jesse Mitchells has characterised the Kimmel remarks as a deliberately staged litmus test of public reaction,¹³ and recounted that Obama later walked the comments back, saying he knew nothing the public did not know and framing the matter in terms of the Fermi paradox.¹⁴

Obama himself said there is footage and records of objects in the sky whose movement and trajectory cannot be explained, and that he considers it worthwhile for people to seriously investigate what such unexplained aerial objects are.¹⁵¹⁶ Jesse Mitchells has identified the UFO programmes discussed openly as comprising the 2017 New York Times article on the Pentagon Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) program, what Obama discussed and investigated, and what Harry Reid set up between 2007 and 2012.¹⁷ Jason Samosa has described a Freedom of Information Act request by John Greenewald that returned either roughly 3,000 or roughly 30,000 references to unidentified aerial phenomena within Obama’s presidential documents.¹⁸

Separately, Jason Samosa has offered the view that Clinton and Obama both came to office without prior ties to the US political establishment, in contrast to Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon and the George Herbert Walker Bush/George W. Bush family.¹⁹ Jesse Mitchells has also stated that Obama is producing a documentary about the Betty and Barney Hill abduction case.¹²
