Bob Lazar is a Nevada businessman who, in the late 1980s, went public with claims that he had worked as a physicist reverse-engineering the propulsion systems of recovered alien craft at Area 51.1 In 1989 he gave an interview, anonymous at first, to journalist George Knapp of KLAS-TV in the 1989 Bob Lazar KLAS interview, asserting that he had worked on a recovered extraterrestrial flying saucer at a site he called S4.2
Jim Goodall had met Lazar before he made the S4 allegation.3 At their first meeting in the early 1980s, Lazar was a UFO sceptic who mocked John Lear for his outspoken belief in UFOs.4 Goodall said Lazar once told him he was a nuclear physicist who would not admit UFOs are real even with a gun to his head.5 Goodall also said a source of his at Area 51 went treasure-hunting near where Lazar said S4 was located and was confronted by armed security personnel demanding identification, who appeared to arrive with no vehicle and no visible building or tunnel.6 After going public, Lazar said an official cover-up began, including men in black wiping his university degree records.7 Knapp rebutted official denials that Lazar had ever worked at Los Alamos in New Mexico, citing an old news story placing him there and the fact that Lazar had taken him into the secure facility and appeared familiar with the site and its staff.8 Filmmaker Jeremy Corbell located a witness whom Lazar said had vetted him for his Area 51 security clearance.9 Lazar has speculated that if anyone influenced his being hired at S4, it was Edward Teller, who told someone to give the young man from Los Alamos a chance.10 In 1990 Lazar was arrested for aiding and abetting a prostitution ring, a charge later reduced to felony pandering, for which he served community service.11
Lazar attended the McMinnville UFO Festival together with David Fravor.12 There, Fravor and his wife socialised with Lazar and his wife without discussing UFO topics.13 Fravor said Lazar’s public notoriety over his UFO-related claims had damaged his life,14 and described him as a straightforward, sane, normal and very intelligent person15 and as a propulsion specialist.16 According to Fravor, Lazar has a bicycle fitted with a rocket motor17 and built a rocket car.18 Two decades after Lazar’s 1989 disclosure, David Fruehauf, a former SR-71 Blackbird pilot, went public in a television interview partially backing Lazar’s claims, calling him, in Fruehauf’s words, very credible.19 Fruehauf said he was never at Area 51 at the same time as Lazar, but considered his account very accurate and said he sounded totally believable.20 Fruehauf also said he knew witnesses who had seen Lazar somewhere at Area 51.21
At S4, Barry trained Lazar.22 Lazar said Barry was excited to have a new partner and to show him new information, suggesting Barry had previously worked alone for some time.23 Lazar said he hinted to Barry that the technology should not be kept secret and that Barry seemed to silently agree,24 and that he had hoped Barry would follow him in speaking out publicly after his story broke, though this did not happen.25 Lazar was concerned that people would focus their anger on Barry and that there would be a price for him to pay after he went public.26 He has said that nobody tried to locate or track down Barry, despite the valuable technical information he would have had.27 Lazar also withheld the name of a security guard he knew as Chuck Payne for a long time, because Payne was a well-known, overt security presence at S4.28 Payne was one of the site’s security guards,29 and, unlike most of the tight-lipped guards there, was an extrovert who greeted Lazar and others personally,30 making him well known to everyone who worked at S4.31 Luigi Venditelli said he was surprised when Lazar first revealed the name in an interview around 2023.32 Chris Ramsay noted that a senator who shares the name Chuck Payne, found in online searches, is a different person from the security guard Lazar described.33
Lazar said his two directives at S4 were to duplicate the power and propulsion system using existing materials, and to disable the system from a distance using existing materials, both without budget limits.34 According to Ramsay, Lazar was permitted to review three briefings during his document readings there: Galileo, Sidekick, and Looking Glass.35 Lazar has said he considers gravity propulsion the most fundamental of the three programmes, since gravity manipulation underlies the other two capabilities and time dilation follows from gravity manipulation,36 though he says he does not know whether the technology has since been used to manipulate or peer into time.37 He and his colleagues were given an opaque yellow fluid that tasted like pine sap as part of testing.38 Lazar denies this was part of psychological conditioning meant to make him think his experience was a hallucination,39 saying instead he was told it was an immune-system booster given after allergen testing, because the facility’s substances were of unknown composition and interaction with the human body.40 He states his mind was completely clear every time he was at S4 and denies anyone tampered with his head or memory,41 though he says the programme deliberately inserted incorrect and misleading information specific to each person, so that any leak could be traced to its source.42 He draws a hard distinction between what he directly worked on, saw and touched and what he was only told or read, treating only the former as verified,43 and believes a lot of nonsense is mixed in with the reading material he was given.44
Dennis Mariani would stare at Lazar for 20 minutes in a menacing way during the bus ride to S4,45 and once invited him to watch a test flight outside at the site.46 Lazar and his colleagues had been told there would be a test at two o’clock and to be in the big hangar,47 but on the day the craft was already outside and Mariani came in and told the team to come, making it seem like a last-minute decision.48 Lazar has speculated that he and his colleagues may not have been supposed to know how the craft got out of the hangar.49 Many people have spent considerable effort trying to locate Mariani, who was older than Lazar, in the belief he would know a great deal about the programme.50,51 Lazar said Knapp called and asked to meet him at the Union Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas,52 relatively soon after he went public rather than months later.53 Lazar brought Gene Huff along as a witness when he went to meet Mariani.54 As he approached, Lazar said he recognised other faces coming from Mariani’s direction as people he had seen at S4,55 though Chuck Payne was not among them.56 Lazar believes those unfamiliar faces were S4 security personnel.57 When Lazar approached and said his name, Mariani would not look at him or respond.58 Lazar has said that, according to people he knows who investigated Mariani’s fate, Mariani appears to have died,59 and that he has seen a photograph of a gravestone he believes, along with other connecting details, belongs to Mariani.60 Venditelli considers the independent corroboration of Mariani’s existence as supporting the reality of Lazar’s account, since Lazar was the one who first mentioned him.61 During a desert filming trip near Las Vegas for Project Gravator, in which a film crew photographed Lazar with a DeLorean time machine prop,62 Lazar told Venditelli there was something he could share that he had not shared before.63
Lazar’s name is frequently linked to the Billy Meier UFO contact case. Ramsay said Lazar and Billy Meier are two of the most contentious names in the UFO field, ones that instantly cause people to start feuding.64 Ramsay said Lazar pointed out that the Meier “sports model” beam ship was a one-for-one identical match to craft he was familiar with, and was blown away by it,65 and that he and Lazar both agree the later Meier material is questionable.66 According to Ramsay, the beam ship shown to Lazar is an identical physical match to the craft in a 1975 photograph, though perhaps not in size,67 and one possible explanation he offered is that the Meier craft was authentic and the craft shown to Lazar was a replica, perhaps a Lockheed Martin deep underground black military project.68 Michael Horn said Lazar examined material from the Meier case.69 According to Ramsay, Bill Herman was told by the beings he encountered that they were from Zeta Reticulum before Lazar discussed Zeta Reticuli.70 Erik Nanstiel said that when Lazar read briefing papers at S4, the military reported that the Greys considered humans as containers, and that humans were given religion so they would not damage the containers.71 Nanstiel also said Lazar speculated, without firmly standing by it, that this reference to humans as containers might mean containers of souls or of blood, since the Greys consume blood.72 Lazar has said he respects David Grush for coming forward publicly.73 Ramsay keeps a picture on his wall of the heart-shaped field around the craft that Lazar described.74 Jesse Mitchells said Lazar is the only person to have said he worked on the craft itself, at S4 in 1989,75 and that Lazar describes the work as parallel engineering rather than reverse engineering - recreating the object by prosaic human means rather than determining exactly how it was made.76
