Nathan Twining

US Air Force general whose 1947 investigation of flying disc reports, while heading the Air Materiel Command, led to Project Sign and Project SAUCER.

Air Materiel Command · General, United States Army Air Forces / United States Air Force

According to In Plain Sight, Nathan Twining was a former combat fighter pilot and a World War Two commander1 who went on to head the United States Army Air Forces Air Materiel Command.2 The Fourth Mind states that he also commanded the 15th Air Force.3 That same source recounts that Padre Pio was reputed to have appeared above his town of Italy San Giovanni Rotondo, causing bombers of the 15th Air Force to turn back in confusion after crews reported seeing a monk standing in the sky.4

In 1947-09, Twining wrote what is recorded as the 1947 Nathan Twining letter on flying discs, in which he acknowledged that the phenomenon under study was “something real and not visionary or fictitious”.5 In the same letter he described the “metallic” looking discs as showing extreme rates of climb and manoeuvrability, including evasion when detected.6 Twining wrote that these capabilities “lend belief to the possibility that some of the objects are controlled either manually, or remotely”.7

Writing in The Fourth Mind, Whitley Strieber describes the 1947 Twining Memo September 23, sent while Twining was commanding officer of the Air Materiel Command at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, as characterising the objects’ functionality as displaying extraordinary manoeuvrability and high speed.8 Separately, Phil McGraw has said that in 1947 Twining told the United States Air Force (USAF) that the phenomenon under investigation was “something real and not visionary or fictitious”, in what is recorded as the 1947 Nathan Twining assessment to the Army Air Forces.9

According to In Plain Sight, Twining recommended a detailed study of the phenomenon, which became known as Project Sign.10 The Report on the Historical Record of U.S. Government Involvement with Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), Volume I states that, as Commander of the Air Technical Services Command, Twining established Project SAUCER on 1947-12-30 to collect and evaluate information relating to Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) sightings considered of concern to national security.11

According to The Fourth Mind, Twining’s son said that his father had privately stated that bodies were delivered by Air Materiel Command along with the debris recovered near Roswell.12
