In this source, James E. McDonald said that, as a scientist, he was not entirely satisfied with hearsay evidence in Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) cases.1 He described the James E. McDonald 1967 Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania UFO investigation tour as an effort to interview witnesses directly, face to face or by telephone, and assess what had happened in individual cases and how credible the witnesses were.2 He said that the tour produced approximately 3,000 metres of interview tape3 and involved about 70 Australians or New Zealanders.4 The source also places part of this work in a broadcast setting: Barry Jones’s Melbourne talkback programme took calls during McDonald’s appearance,5 while Peter Surrey recorded callers’ telephone numbers for possible follow-up interviews.6

One account concerns the 1949 Hawthorn cigar-shaped object sighting. According to the source, Mrs Smith of Australia, Victoria, South Caulfield called the programme and reported seeing a cigar-shaped object over Australia, Victoria, Hawthorn around 1949.7 She said it was perfectly stationary,8 with a dull internal light moving continuously from top to bottom,9 in clear, almost cloudless conditions without thunderstorms.10 James E. McDonald said those conditions ruled out plasmoids of the ball lightning type,11 and that the stationary character ruled out a meteoric fireball.12 The caller also described the object as soundless.13 The source presents these details as material for evaluating an individual report rather than as an identification of the object.

The fieldwork included assistance from the Victorian Flying Saucer Society, which took McDonald through the Victorian countryside to interview key witnesses.14 At Australia, Victoria, Moe, he examined the February 1963 Moe farm disc sighting reported by farmer Brew: Brew reported a large disc-like object emerging from overcast conditions and hovering about 90 metres away.15 He also reported cattle stamping, barking dogs and horses breaking loose.16 A comparable circa 1957 Wairakei flying saucer sighting by a surveying engineer involved two witnesses who independently reported a grey saucer-shaped object rising vertically from the steam bores at New Zealand, Waikato, Wairakei.17 The source records subsequent ridicule and reduced willingness to discuss the case.18 McDonald said he had considered multiple explanations, including psychological, technological, fraudulent and geophysical hypotheses,19 and argued that an origin from elsewhere was what remained after eliminating the others.20 He advocated immediate investigation on a global scientific scale.21
