Anomalous Aerial Vehicle (AAV) is a designation used in US Navy and Department of Defense reporting for unidentified objects encountered during fleet operations, most closely associated with a series of contacts involving the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) carrier strike group off the coast of California in November 2004. The term is not a claim about origin; it functions administratively, describing an aerial contact that could not be identified using available sensors and procedures.
The best-documented AAV encounter occurred on 2004-11-14, during a period in which USS Princeton (CG-59) had detected multiple AAVs operating around Carrier Strike Group 11 (CSG-11) on several occasions.1 Princeton reported observing an AAV descend from an altitude of roughly 18,000 metres to around 15 metres within seconds.2 Princeton vectored a flight of two F/A-18F aircraft from Strike Fighter Squadron 41 (VFA-41), transferring control from the E-2C Hawkeye, which brought the jets to a visual range of approximately 1.6 kilometres from the object.3 The pilots, David Fravor flying FastEagle 01 and Alex Dietrich flying FastEagle 02, obtained visual and sensor contact at a position roughly 130 kilometres south of the U.S./Mexico border, off the Baja Mexico coast.4 Fravor’s crew had received intermittent situational awareness of the contact via Link-16 data, which his weapon system operator assumed originated from Princeton’s AN/SPY-1 radar.5
Fravor’s first indication of the object was a disturbance on the ocean surface, which he described as localised beneath the object rather than a trail or wake, resembling frothy waves and foam as though the water were boiling.6 Visual contact followed, with the object appearing as an elongated egg or “Tic Tac” shape with a discernible midline horizontal axis,7 solid white, smooth, and without visible edges,8 and approximately 14 metres in length.9 Fravor said the object was “holding like a Harrier”, referencing the AV-8B Harrier’s vertical/short takeoff and landing capability via thrust vectoring.10 As his flight began a descent from about 3,000 metres at roughly 650 kilometres per hour to attempt a closer visual identification,1112 Fravor assessed that the object appeared to recognise his aircraft, realigning its axis to point toward him.13 As his flight completed its manoeuvre, the object ascended and pulled a lift vector on and aft of them at a speed Fravor described as supersonic.14 The flight’s onboard radar could not obtain a lock on the object,15 though the type’s forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensor could track it while it was stationary or moving slowly.16 Following the encounter, Fravor’s flight returned to Nimitz.17
Fravor’s crew relayed what they had seen to a second flight crewed by Chad Underwood and asked them to attempt to observe and record the object.18 Underwood attempted multiple times to transition his radar to Single Target Track mode but could not achieve a lock,19 and reported no jamming cues, such as strobe or “champagne bubbles”, or other normal electronic-attack indications while attempting to track it.20 The object he observed matched Fravor’s description: solid white, smooth, with no edges and no nacelles, pylons, or wings.21 Underwood tracked it briefly on FLIR before it moved out of the sensor’s field of view; he made no attempt to slew the camera and lost situational awareness of the object.22
USS Louisville (SSN-724) was operating in the vicinity as part of CSG-11 during the detection and intercept.23 A former submarine officer who served aboard Louisville during the period said there were no unidentified sonar contacts in the vicinity of the aerial sightings.24 The strike group’s commander at the time was Rear Admiral D.C. Curtis;25 Peter Daly assumed command of CSG-11 in January 2005, after the intercept, and had no knowledge of or involvement in the incident.26 The Third Fleet Intelligence (Senior Intelligence Officer (N2)) received an email-based mission report on the encounter, including the FLIR footage.27 The strike group’s Director of Operations (N3) said that at no time did the CSG consider the object a threat to the battle group.28
The term AAV was later used publicly by Luis Elizondo, who described the mission of the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) as collecting and analysing information involving anomalous aerial vehicles.29 Elizondo said AAVs studied under the programme had been observed reaching 600 to 700 G-forces30 and flying at approximately 21,000 kilometres per hour,31 and that they showed no obvious signs of propulsion, wings, or control surfaces.32
