Coordinate Remote Viewing (CRV) is a form of remote viewing developed by Ingo Swann at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI).1 As described in Remote Viewing Secrets: A Handbook, the protocol entails prompting the viewer with specific geographic coordinates for a target site,2 gathering information through a structured process built around visual sensory impressions.3 The viewer first establishes a target, typically a location or object, and then proceeds through a series of structured steps.4 Targets are identified using a numeric or alpha/numeric series.5 The term Controlled Remote Viewing (CRV) is sometimes used interchangeably with Coordinate Remote Viewing.6 It sits alongside Extended Remote Viewing (ERV) and Scientific Remote Viewing (SRV) as a named remote-viewing method, while Technical Remote Viewing (TRV) is described as a variation on Controlled Remote Viewing.7
According to Joseph McMoneagle, Ingo Swann — one of the psychics working at SRI International — suggested using map coordinates to identify a specific location as a remote-viewing target, giving rise to the coordinate targeting system.8 The initial coordinate remote-viewing targets were large geographic features — islands, rivers, mountains, waterfalls, and cityscapes — identified by map coordinates.9 McMoneagle said sceptics raised the theory that viewers using the coordinate system could have unconsciously memorised major land features from topographical maps by their longitude and latitude gridlines, an allegation he interpreted as effectively accusing the viewers of cheating.10 On the military side of Project STARGATE, a different coordinate system was used from military maps, in which letter and number combinations changed depending on the specific map, in an attempt to counter scepticism about eidetic memory.11 Real map coordinates were placed inside sealed, opaque envelopes, with false coordinates lacking degrees, minutes, and seconds written on the outside to serve only as an identifier for that day’s project.12
Coordinate targets use information written on a sealed envelope — alpha, numeric, or a combination of the two — to identify the target of interest, with no relationship between the identifying data and the envelope’s contents.13 The only two differences between the Outbounder Remote Viewing protocol and Coordinate Remote Viewing are the absence of an outbounder at the target site and the manner in which feedback is provided to the viewer.14 Because there is no outbounder site for the viewer to visit under Coordinate Remote Viewing, the person controlling the targeting information or target pool instead provides as much feedback as feasible about the original target once the session has ended.15 McMoneagle said a viewer can be given specific tasking instructions for a mobile target as long as it is targeted through the Outbounder Remote Viewing, Coordinate Remote Viewing, or photographic sealed-envelope protocols,16 and that ideas, concepts, plans, thoughts, words, and feelings can likewise be targeted using a coordinate system with sealed envelopes, or photographs illustrating them.17 He said Associative Remote Viewing works identically to the Coordinate Remote Viewing protocol, except that two targets — Target A and Target B — are chosen rather than one target being randomly selected.18 For sub-atomic or micro targets, McMoneagle said the coordinate or sealed-envelope protocol remains the normal approach, though the difficulty lies in how to frame the question, since sub-atomic structures can only be hypothesised and are rarely displayed.19
In the documentary How The CIA Spent Millions On Psychic Spies - PROJECT: STARGATE, Ed Dames states that Swann developed the remote-viewing structure used to train the Project STARGATE prototype team.20 According to the documentary, Dames’s own process for locating a target proceeds through four stages.21 In coordinate remote viewing, target reference numbers are encased in square brackets.22
